Although riding an amusement ride is listed as one of the safest recreational activities around, with over 270 million people visiting amusement parks each year, it is a shock to learn that one-third of all roller coasters have never been inspected by any kind of safety official at all. In February 1978, a gondola care of the Skybucket ride plunged 50 feet to the ground, killing a man and seriously injuring his wife. The ride apparently slipped from its cable. Trends of the industry have been to increase the speed and force of these machines. Riders are often hurt, sometimes seriously enough to require hospitalization and visits to the emergency room. Occasionally death is involved. Due to a loophole in the law, the industry has been able to slide by routine product safety regulations. The loophole is an exemption which states that the Consumer Product Safety Commission can regulate every other consumer product and cannot set foot in an amusement park for the purpose of regulating a ride that is fixed to the site, as are the rides associated with theme parks. Rider misconduct is the leading cause of accidents associated with amusement park accidents. Here are some guidelines to ensure a safe day at the park for you and your loved ones: Consider visiting another park if there have been a consistent number of accidents that have occurred due to structural or maintenance failure, or operator error. If the grounds are not well-maintained, it can be considered an accurate reflection of how the rides are maintained. Follow all age, weight, and height restrictions outlined at the boarding point of every ride. Keep all body parts inside the car and do not rock the car back and forth. Make sure the rides operator is paying attention to the ride and all occupants aboard the ride. This should be his main focus. The operator should not be showing off in any way. Do not force a child to ride a ride if they show any signs of apprehension. Forcing a child to do so could result in the child wanting to disembark during the course of the ride, resulting in injury or even death.
