A big rig truck typically weighs 80,000 lbs and ranges about 67-75 feet long. Now picture a middle class passenger vehicle colliding head on with this huge monster.

The tremendous difference in size and weight present a distinct element to accidents involving big rig trucks. It will take a 40-ton 18-wheeler driving at 65 mph an additional 100 feet to stop than it would if it were traveling at 55 mph. This explains why a typical big rig accident usually involves rear-end collisions. The "Right Hand Squeeze," refers to a jack-knifed trailer that, due to a miscalculation by the driver error, had either lost control in bad weather or experienced a loss of control, coupled with brake failure.

California is one of only 10 states that imposes a slower speed limit for big rigs and commercial vehicles. If the driver of a big rig truck exceeds the speed limit of 55 mph by 15 or more mph, the odds are likely that along with the citation he will be charged with a misdemeanor.

Approximately 7% of all the vehicle miles driven in the nation are done so by big rig drivers. Add 2% to the 7% and the 9% you arrive at is the number of fatal traffic accidents attributed solely to big rigs and the drivers behind the wheel. Federal crash statistics have determined that 20% of big rig accidents are due to excessive speed. Issues addressing the procedures involved in the hiring and training of drivers are starting to surface. Are there certain standards and requirement that must be met before just ANYONE is allowed to sit above us take our lives into their hands?
