It was a mystery from the beginning. Studies conducted by Baxter indicated no malfunction of any kind that connected the deaths of 11 patients using their dialysis system to the device itself. Nonetheless, in October of 2001, 10 more deaths of patients undergoing the treatment prompted the removal of 460 fibrous dialysis filters from two different hospitals in Spain. Japan pulled 80% of the medical products associated with the systems, just to be safe, causing 210 medical institutions and all Japanese Wholesalers involved in the medical market to feel the devastating effects. The following November, two patients at the same Austin, TX hospital died while cleansing their blood with a system equipped with the Baxter filter. Although Baxter held firm to their statement claiming no evidence had been produced connecting the deaths to their filter, upon further investigation it was uncovered that the deaths were somehow linked to filters produced in the Baxter plant located in Sweden. 3M is the company that supplied Baxter with a chemical that is sold merely for the purpose of cleaning electronic products and devices. It turns out that Baxter used the product to determine if the filters showed any signs of leakage or had the possibility of absorbing the very blood it was aiding in cleansing. It was assumed by Baxter that the product would evaporate on its own from the filter in its own time. This turned out to be a very wrong assumption on Baxter's part. As these finding were brought to light, Spain became the first in many countries to file suit against Baxter. Although it was the chemical supplied by 3M that caused the deaths and illnesses in as many as 650 patients associated with the Baxter product, Baxter chose to leave 3M out of it. A spokesman for 3M states that, "Although it has been found to have been a main player in the numerous fatalities and injuries involved with using the filter, it was a decision made by Baxter alone to use the chemical for purposes other than what it was purchased for."
