Vasca, Inc introduced The LifeSite Hemodialysis Access System in 1998. Although it has been found to reduce some of the side effects associated with hemodialysis- such as infection and blood clotting- it has been linked to 129 deaths and/or serious injuries. In 20 cases, the FDA's investigation uncovered information that suggests the device "may have caused complications ending in death or injury. Malfunctions in the device, if a re-occurring problem, could hurt the patient, if not kill them." Hemodialysis is the process of removing blood from a patient, washing it through an artificial kidney and returning it back into the patients system. The LifeSite System is a system with two valves, (one is to remove the blood from the patient's body, the other is to return the cleansed blood into the patient's body) designed to be implanted under the collarbone with a catheter running from a valve into a large vein. From the beginning, Vasca, Inc was acting as a company with something to hide. They did not meet the deadlines given to them by the FDA regarding reports to be submitted. The doctors and nurses, who were classified as having received "specialized training" in this area, were filing complaints that they were not being properly trained. Indications suggest that Vasca was attempting to conceal pertinent information that this device could have possible fatal results.
