Baycol is marketed worldwide by Bayer and, in the United States, co-marketed by GlaxoSmithKline. It is a cholesterol-lowering drug belonging to a class of drugs known as "statins". It is prescribed to reduce your cholesterol and to reduce your risk of heart disease. Consumption of Baycol can cause 'rhabdomyolysis', a life-threatening condition in which muscle cells are destroyed and released into the bloodstream. Rhabdomyolysis can cause severe muscle pain, most frequently in the lower back and calves, and occasionally is so severe that patients develop potentially fatal kidney failure and other organ damage. Symptoms of rhabdomyolysis include muscle pain, weakness, tenderness, fever, dark urine, nausea, and vomiting. POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS 1. Rhabdomyolysis involves injury to skeletal muscles and possibly kidney failure caused by toxic effects of the contents of muscle cells. 2. Elevated levels of myoglobin can result in renal (kidney) failure 3. Additional side effects are: weight gain, (unintentional), seizures, joint pain, and fatigue. Some of the other side effects that are common are peripheral neuropathy, gastrointestinal side effects, allergy or hypersensitivity reactions and liver enzymes. TREATMENT OF RHABDOMYOLYSIS Early and aggressive hydration may prevent complications by rapidly eliminating the myoglobin out of the kidneys. The hydration needs with muscle necrosis may approximate the massive fluid volume needs of a severely burned patient. This may involve intravenous administration of several liters of fluid until the condition stabilizes. Diuretic medications such as mannitol or furosemide may aid in flushing the pigment out of the kidneys. If the urine output is sufficient, bicarbonate may be given to maintain an alkaline urine state. This helps to prevent the dissociation of myoglobin into toxic compounds. Hyperkalemia should be treated if present. Kidney failure should be treated as appropriate.
