The combined oral contraceptive (OC) pill is a safe and effective method of birth control for most women. It prevents ovulation in most women. Therefore, in addition to its contraceptive action it also eliminates mid-cycle pain which some women experience with ovulation. Birth Control Pills also offer medical benefits such as decreased menstrual cramps and/or heavy bleeding, regulation of periods, and because of the decreased bleeding, it may result in a decrease in anemia. There is also some protection against endometrial and ovarian cancer. However, no medication or birth control method is without the potential for side effects. If the combined estrogen-progestin pills taken at the same time each day as directed by the doctor and using a back-up method if some other medication is being taken then that would change its effectiveness, still only 1 in a 1000 women can still become pregnant. PRECAUTIONS Women with Thrombophlebitis (blood clots) must not consume them. Women who have suffered a cerebrovascular accident (stroke) Women who are over 35 years of age and regularly smoke around 15 cigarettes a day. Women with conditions such as mental retardation, psychiatric illness, alcoholism or chemical abuse or other conditions which make it difficult to take the medication correctly and consistently. SIDE EFFECTS Scanty periods, or breakthrough bleeding may occur. Nausea may occur in the first cycle or two, but less commonly in subsequent cycles. (It is recommended that the woman take her "pill" with food to avoid nausea.) Headaches, decrease in libido, depression or mood change, may occur. Some other effects possible are: weight gain, increased breast size, cervical erosion, fluid retention, acne, increased LDL cholesterol, decreased HDL cholesterol, itching, or decreased carbohydrate tolerance are possible problems.
