The word confrey comes from the Latin word "conferre", which means to bring together. It is a useful medicinal herb, which grows upto 30ft tall. confrey is useful as a poultice for varicose ulcers and acompress for varicose veins. It is also good for chest colds, acts as a tonic for arthritis pains. confrey is also considered good for "athlete's foot". confrey is used for the healing of wounds, sprains, bruises, and bone fractures, and to reduce inflammation and swelling related to these injuries. It is also used for the treatment of gallstones, pleurisy, gastrointestinal ulcers, colitis and insect bites. The roots, leaves, liquid extracts from the plant are placed over bruises/cuts. Sometimes even dried confrey is also used. SIDE EFFECTS confrey, if taken internally can seriously damage liver, and in some cases can lead to death. It contains chemicals called pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which cause severe liver damage. Most people would have to consume very large quantities of the plant in order to do any harm, though anyone with liver problems should obviously be more cautious. In general, the health-promoting properties of the plant probably far outweigh any possible disbenefits, especially if only the younger leaves are used.
