Cytotec, (misoprostol) also known by its generic name of misoprostol, is an ulcer drug that is used by obstetricians for inducing labor. It is a small pill that can be taken orally or broken in pieces and inserted vaginally. The drug is only approved as an ulcer medication. Cytotec is used as a labor-inducing drug, primarily because it is a cheap substitute for other drugs used in labor and delivery. People who take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may be given Cytotec tablets to help prevent stomach ulcers. However there are certain risks of using Cytotec. They include increased incidence of jaundice in the baby, fetal distress caused by uterine hyperstimulation, fluid overload from the IV use, increased blood loss post-partum, amniotic fluid embolism, uterine rupture, and an overall increased risk of instrumental or surgical delivery. This drug causes uterine contractions that could lead to a miscarriage. If you do have a miscarriage, there is a risk that it might be incomplete. This could lead to bleeding, hospitalization, surgery, infertility, or even death. It is extremely important to use reliable contraception while taking Cytotec. SIDE EFFECTS Some adverse effects in pregnant women include maternal or fetal death; uterine hyperstimulation, rupture or perforation requiring uterine surgical repair, hysterectomy or salpingo-oophorectomy; amniotic fluid embolism; severe vaginal bleeding, retained placenta, shock, fetal bradycardia and pelvic pain. Cytotec is also known to cause diarrhea, abdominal cramps, constipation, gas, menstrual pains, spotting and intestinal bleeding.
