Duract (bromfenac sodium capsules) was a Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug manufactured by American Home Products for short-term management of pain (around 10 days). The drug was widely prescribed in 1997 and 1998 particularly to relieve pain and reduce inflammation, treat headaches, muscle aches, dental pain, menstrual cramps and athletic injuries. This drug was also used to reduce fever. Duract was removed from the market in May of 1998 due to a large number of adverse drug experience reports. This drug is highly liver toxic and causes elevated liver enzymes which can lead to liver failure necessitating liver transplant or death. The initial symptoms of liver damage are abdominal pain, swelling in the stomach and extremities,brown urine, yellow eyes and jaundice. Most common side effects are abdominal pain, headache, nausea, increased sleepiness, and constipation. Duract may also cause dizziness, drowsiness or blurred vision. It may also rarely cause ringing in the ears and or loss of hearing. Infrequently, this medication may increase the skin's sensitivity to sunlight. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, dizziness or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
