Ephedra refers to several related species of herbs that commonly grow in desert areas. Ephedrine (diet product made by Cytodyne technologies) is a central nervous system stimulant and decongestant that is structurally similar to the amphetamines. Ephedrine is effective for relieving bronchial asthma, but increases heart rate and blood pressure. It also acts to relieve nasal congestion. Ephedrine comes from Ma Huang which is a Chinese herb used in china for hundreds of years. It is derived from the plants of the genus and is best known as a botanical source of the alkaloids ephedrine, pseudoephedrine and others. SIDE EFFECTS Side effects from using Ephedrine are high blood pressure, insomnia, euphoria, stroke, heart attacks, restlessness and in some extreme cases death. Ephedrine has a tendency to set off adrenaline (sudden burst of energy). It can also increase the feeling of alertness and subsequently cause reduced appetite. Since the use of Ephedrine for bodybuilding causes potential harm, self-medication with ephedra-containing products is ill advised. Do not take ephedrine if you have high blood pressure, diabetes, or thyroid problems, or if you are on antidepressant medications. Also do not use ephedrine if you are breast-feeding, as the drug is known to enter breast milk.
