Fen phen is a group of drugs, which includes combinations of Ionimin, Adipex, Fastin (brand names of phentermine), Pondimin (fenfluramine) and Redux (dexfenfluramine). Combinations of these drugs have been known to cause heart valve damage, pulmonary cardiovascular damage and neuropsychological damage. Valvulopathy occurs when the heart-valves (typically the aortic and mitral valves) do not open and close properly, causing regurgitation of blood. The patient may have no symptoms though the physician may hear a new heart murmur (abnormal sound as the blood flows over a valve), or the changes may be detected with a painless, non-invasive special heart test called an echocardiogram. Patients who have taken these drugs may have changes in their heart valves that cause leakiness and backflow of blood. If the case is serious the patient may experience such symptoms as shortness of breath, excessive tiredness, chest pain, fainting, and swelling of the legs (edema). Pondimin (fenfluramine hydrochloride) has been reported to be associated with the occurrence of serious regurgitant cardiac valvular disease, including disease of the mitral, aortic, and/or tricuspid valves. Continuous use of the drug for around 3 months can cause damage. 'Herbal fen-phen' is a product that does not contain fenfluramine, dexfenfluramine, or phentermine. Products called "herbal fen-phen" often contain a combination of ephedra (an ephedrine containing herb) and caffeine, but may also contain other herbal ingredients. Although a majority of this disease is affecting women, it can also affect men.
