Hepatitis B is spread by contact with infected blood or other body fluids of people who have hepatitis B or C infection. Hepatitis B vaccine is available to prevent hepatitis B. This vaccine should be given to people who are at high risk for this illness, such as health care workers, all children, drug users, people who get tattoos or body piercing, prostitutes and homosexuals with multiple sex partners. SIDE EFFECTS The most common side effects from hepatitis B vaccination are pain at the injection site and mild to moderate fever. Some of the serious side effects caused by the Hepatitis B vaccine are multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, or autoimmune disorders. Sometimes a low rate of anaphylaxis (hives, difficulty in breathing, shock) is also observed. Anaphylactic reactions can be life threatening, and therefore further vaccination with hepatitis B vaccine is contraindicated in persons with a history of anaphylaxis after a previous dose of vaccine. Effects on children include breathing difficulties, swelling in the mouth and shock. The hepatitis B vaccine has been linked to Guillain-Barré Syndrome, which causes the rapid onset of muscle weakness and often, paralysis of the legs, arms and breathing muscles.
