Lamisil (terbinafine) is used to cure onychomycosis. Onychomycosis is a fungul nail disease in which the tiny organisms (called dermatophytes) find their way under a nail, and begin to multiply. Ironically, when the fungus finds its way under the nail, the nail itself provides a protective environment for the fungus to thrive. That's why it's so difficult to stop, and why treatment from the inside is so effective. The toenails are most vulnerable to this infection, since they spend much of their day surrounded by dark, warm, and often moist shoes and socks. SIDE EFFECTS Use of lamisil can cause headaches, diarrhea, upset stomachs, taste disturbance, nausea, diarrhea, abnormal pain, flatulence, rash, itching, hives, abnormality in laboratory tests of liver enzymes. But the frequency of these complaints is very marginal. Rare cases of symptomatic hepatobiliary dysfunction including cholestatic hepatitis, changes in the retina and lens of the eye have also been reported. Use of Lamisil can sometimes also cause liver failure. WHO SHOULD NOT TAKE LAMISIL If you are suffering from any liver problem. If you are having a skin rash, or have developed one while taking Lamisil, then immediately discontinue its use. Lamisil tablets should not be taken by pregnant women. PRECAUTIONS If you are taking Lamisil, then you are advised to take weekly or biweekly blood testing. Lamisil tablets should not be combined with any other medications. Lamisil tablets should be kept away from children.
