Lotronex (alosteron) is a prescription medicine used to treat IBS in women who have diarrhea as their main symptom (diarrhea-predominant) It was the first product for this treatment, however in November 2000 it was withdrawn by its manufacturer, Glaxo, because of the serious complications of constipation and reports of ischemic colitis, resulting in hospitalization and surgical procedures. IBS (Irritable Bowel syndrome). It is a disorder of the gastrointestinal tract that results in chronic or recurring diarrhea, constipation, or both. It is usually associated with abdominal pain and cramping, and oftentimes with excessive gas or bloating. Bowel movements are often accompanied by a sense of urgency and abdominal cramping. Sometimes formed stools are thin or ribbon-like, and mucus may be present in them. POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS This drug has been associated with reports of serious side effects such as intestinal damage as a result of reduced blood flow to the intestine (ischemic colitis), severely obstructed or ruptured bowels (complications of severe constipation), and death.
