Phenylpropanolamine is an ingredient used in prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) drug products as a nasal decongestant to relieve stuffy nose or sinus congestion and in OTC weight control drug products to control appetite. It is a synthetic sympathomimetic amine structurally similar to pressor amines (i.e., epinephrine, phenylephrine, and ephedrine) and central nervous system stimulants (i.e., ephedrine, amphetamine). It is a common ingredient in cough-cold remedies and appetite suppressants. Each year, billions of doses are consumed in the United States, making PPA one of the most commonly used non-prescription medications. WHY IS IT UNSAFE? Scientists at Yale University School of medicine conducted a study in which it was found that people who used this product risked hemorrhagic stroke. PPA causes blood vessels to constrict or become smaller. This results in less blood flow through the vessel and at higher pressure. For some people, this may result in a rupture of the brain vessels which is called a "hemorrhagic" or bleeding stroke. These are different from the more typical non-hemorrhagic strokes we hear of. Because of continued reports to the FDA of hemorrhagic stroke associated with phenylpropanolamine and the results of the Yale study, it is felt that the risks of using phenylpropanolamine outweigh the benefits and that consumers no longer use products containing phenylpropanolamine.
