Propulsid (generic name is Cisapride) is a medicine for the treatment of Acid reflux disease (night time heartburn) and GERD. Propulsid targets the underlying motility related causes of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) by improving esophageal peristalsis, increasing the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) tone, and prompting gastric emptying. SIDE EFFECTS This drug's manufacturers - Johnson & Johnson stopped selling it in July 2000 due to hundreds of heart disorders arising out of its use. The side effects of this drug are very serious. Some serious side effects are ventricular Tachycardia (V Tach) , Ventricular fibrillation (V Fib), and QT Wave Prolongation. Over a 100 people have already died consuming this drug. The risk of these side effects increases if these drugs are used alongside antibiotics, antiarrythymics, antidepressants, and grape juice. If the drug is given to patients who suffer from certain other illnesses, then the risks of side effects increases. In addition to adults, there have also been adverse reactions, including death, to some of the pediatric patients, who have been treated with Propulsid. Some of the pediatric deaths were due to seizures and cardiovascular problems, such as heart block and ventricular tachycardia. In addition to the cardiovascular problems, there have been possible exacerbation of asthma, gynecomastia, female breast enlargement, urinal incontinence, hyperprolactinemia. WHEN NOT TO USE PROPULSID Propulsid should not be used in patients with uncorrected hypokalemia or hypomagnesemia or who might experience rapid reduction of plasma potassium such as those administered potassium-wasting diuretics and/or insulin in acute settings.
