Remicade (Generic Name - Infliximab) is a drug prescribed for the treatment of autoimmune disorders namely, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Crohn's Disease. What is autoimmunity? When the body's immune system attacks its own cells instead of the Invading attackers, it is called autoimmunity. Autoimmunity can lead to various "autoimmune disorders". Some of the main disorders of this type include Rheumatoid Arthritis, Crohn's Disease. Rheumatoid Arthritis and Autoimmunity Rheumatoid Arthritis is a AD (Autoimmune disorder) that affects the joints. It causes the tissue that lines the joint to swell and burn which causes swelling and pain. Remicade combined with methotraxate (1)reduces signs and symptoms, (2)inhibits progression of structural damage, (3) improves physical function in patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis who have had an inadequate response to methotraxate. Crohn's Disease and Autoimmunity Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune bowel disease characterized by severe and persistent inflammation of the lining of the gastrointestinal tract. Scientists believe that a genetic tendency towards Crohn's disease leads to an autoimmune response in the intestine that is possibly triggered by an environmental or dietary agent. Remicade works by neutralizing a protein (Tumor Necrosis Factor alpha TNF-alpha) that contributes to the inflammation in Crohn's disease, halting further inflammation. Remicade is not a cure for Crohn's disease, but it can certainly lessen the impact and save lives. NOTE - people with heart problems should not take Remicade. SIDE EFFECTS Some infections like (TB) Tuberculosis, and Sepsis can happen. Reports also suggest that infusion reactions with hives, difficulty in breathing , and low blood pressure may also happen.. Some people have also experienced upper respiratory infections, headache, nausea, cough, sinusitis, and rash skins.
