Rezulin (Troglitazone) is a prescription to treat Type 2 Diabetes. It lowers the blood glucose levels in the body by improving the way cells respond to the presence of insulin. It streamlines the processing of insulin and helps diabetics use insulin more effectively. It is manufactured by Parke-Davis (a subsidiary of the Warner-Lambert Company); the FDA approved Rezulin in January of 1997. The FDA recalled Rezulin in March 2000 because it caused liver failure. Approximately 90 cases of liver failure were reported to the FDA - 63 resulted in death and 10 resulted in liver transplants. There were also some reports linking it to heart failure. SIDE EFFECTS The liver is the primary organ that processes any medication or drugs taken into the human body. When a drug enters the bloodstream, it is the liver that is responsible for breaking the drug down into chemicals that body can use and also eliminates the toxins that the rest of the organs cannot tolerate. During this process, these chemicals can attack and injure the liver. The Merck Manual standard reference recognizes troglitazone (the active ingredient in Rezulin) as capable of causing "serious hepatotoxicity", or serious destruction and/or poisoning of the liver. Drug-induced liver injury can resemble the symptoms of any acute or chronic liver disease. This kind of liver disease can show signs of (1) yellowness of the skin, (2) abdominal pain, (3) brown or dark urine, (4) loss of appetite and weight loss. Rezulin also causes abnormal thickening of the left ventricular wall in the heart. This kind of thickening can cause heart failures in many patients.
