Serzone is an antidepressant medication that provides two kinds of relief for people with depression and symptoms of anxiety. First, it shows positive signs in curing depression, by alleviating anxiety and sleepiness and then if continued over a period of several weeks, it relieves the underlying depression. It is considered an alternative to the popular class of drugs called SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors). Serzone is now being forced by the FDA to mention a black box warning label on the drug informing the consumers that the use of Serzone may lead to a possible life threatening liver failure. Liver effects range from asymptomatic reversible increases in serum transaminase to cases of liver failure resulting in transplant or death. Serzone has relatively mild side effects in comparison with some other anti-depressant medications. The most commonly observed adverse effects associated with Serzone are asthenia (lack of physical strength), dry mouth, nausea, constipation, drowsiness, dizziness, light-headedness, confusion, and blurred or abnormal vision. Never take Serzone with MAO inhibitors, namely Nardil and Parnate because sometimes fatal reactions have occurred when Serzone is used in combination with these drugs. You should avoid Serzone if you are taking Halcion, Hismanal, Propulsid, or Seldane. Serzone can cause you to become drowsy or less alert and may affect your judgment. You should not drive or operate dangerous machinery or participate in any hazardous activity that requires full mental alertness until you know how the drug affects you. What is depression? It is a medical condition that affects thoughts, feelings, physical health and behavior day after day, even when life is going well. Clinical depression is a serious medical illness that affects as many as 11.6 million adult Americans each year.
