Sporanox is a prescription medicine, it treats onychomycosis and three systemic infectious diseases: histoplasmosis, blastomycosis and refractory aspergillosis. (The active ingredient in Sporanox is Itraconazole). Onychomososis is a finger nails infection in which the nails become brown, yellow and brittle. Histoplasmosis and blastomycosis are also fungal infections, which can spread throughout the body. Some people have chronic disorders that make them more susceptible to nail fungus. People with diabetes, circulatory problems, and immunological deficiencies (such as AIDS/HIV infection) are at increased risk, as are the elderly. Although the patient's ailments determine the capsules to be given, Sporanox stays active in the patients' nail bed for up to nine months, SIDE EFFECTS Some of the serious side effects while on Sporanox include Congestive heart failure and other cardiac conditions, respiratory infection, Liver (Hepatic) disease, swellings, rash and Urinary infections. However more common side effects of sporanox are headache, various gastrointestinal problems, Sinus inflammation, Liver enzyme abnormalities, High blood pressure, and Anxiety. In rare cases shortness of breath, unusual swelling of the feet, coughing up white or pink phlegm, nausea, vomiting and, dark colored urine or pale stools. PRECAUTIONS Never take sporanox if you have had heart failure; Have an allergic reaction to Itraconazole. Pregnant patients or patients planning to become pregnant within 2 months after finishing treatment should never take Sporanox. Patients should use effective birth control during Sporanox treatment and for 2 months after finishing treatment. In rare cases, patients taking Sporanox could develop serious heart or liver problems and neuropathy. Patients should contact their doctor immediately if they experience signs and symptoms of heart or liver disease or neuropathy.
