Zyban (generic name - Bupropion Hydrochloride) is the first non-nicotine tablet prescribed by doctors for stopping smoking. It is medically proven to reduce the craving and withdrawal symptoms associated with nicotine. In the case of Zyban it is different to the way other anti-smoking agents work, such as nicotine gum and patches, since these simply supply an alternative source of nicotine other than cigarettes. Zyban works at the neurological level, reducing the craving for nicotine in any form. You keep taking a 150mg tablet a day (for the first 3 days - then you take 2 tablets a day) while gradually reducing smoking. Let this go on for 2 weeks. The complete Zyban course goes on for approximately 7 weeks. SIDE EFECTS The most common side effects are dry mouth, difficulty in sleeping and headaches. These side effects may also be associated with smoking withdrawal symptoms. If they occur they are generally mild and often disappear after a few weeks. Like other medicines Zyban may cause other side effects (e.g. allergy or rash, confusion or visual disturbances) or interact with other drugs. Dry mouth, headache, increased sweating, constipation, anxiety and fatigue may also occur. Zyban is not recommended for women who are pregnant or breast-feeding. Women should notify their healthcare professional if they become pregnant or intend to become pregnant while taking Zyban. If you have liver or kidney problems, tell your doctor before taking ZYBAN. Depending on the severity of your condition, your doctor may need to adjust your dosage.
