Zyprexa is an atypical antipsychotic drug for treating schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders. It is an antipsychotic similar to clozapine or resperidone. It is known, however, that several neurotransmitters in the brain are altered in persons with schizophrenia. Zyprexa works to reduce symptoms of schizophrenia by blocking various serotonin and dopamine receptors. This medication acts to balance two nerve impulses and, by doing so, helps restore more normal thinking and mood. Schizophrenia is a chronic mental illness that is thought to be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Schizophrenia severely affects the way the brain receives and interprets information from the world around one, affecting thinking and judgment, and impairing one's ability to reason logically, organize and communicate thoughts, and function in society. It is important to understand that schizophrenia does not mean "split personality". Usually, you should start feeling the effects of Zyprexa within one week. It may take longer to experience the full effects of Zyprexa, which depends on dosage, symptoms, and varies from person to person. SIDE EFFECTS Zyprexa is known to cause unhealthy changes to the patient's blood sugar level. The following conditions are linked to Zyprexa: (1) Diabetes Mellitus, (2) Hyperglycemia, (3) Diabetic Ketoacidosis. GENERAL PRECAUTIONS If you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, discuss the potential risks of this or any medication with your doctor. It should be noted that older adults might be more sensitive to the side effects of olanzapine than younger adults.
