When the entire world was looking for a new product in the sports utility segment it came in the shape of the Explorer by Ford. It has ruled the roost for almost a decade and has redefined the sports utility vehicle of today. Even now Ford has not stopped at any point and we see the result in the form of Explorer 2002 .It was packed with innumerable features and offered one of the most comprehensive safety and security packages available. As Ford is one of the sales leaders in the auto industry, it attracts a broad range of customers with varying demographics and interests. But all is not well in the Ford camp. Behind this seemingly perfect setting of the Explorer, Ford has somehow misjudged the engineering of the sports utility vehicle that was to be. This venture that was to have pioneered the way for the entire auto industry somehow went turtle. At first the consumer groups ranging from young professionals to active retirees were attracted to this new Ford baby. The sales were on the upside and the going was good as far as the Ford group was concerned. Just when they were beginning to relish the sweet taste of success, misfortune struck upon this venture, with their clients pouring in with complaints about mishaps occurring with them. The unusual freak accident was of course expected, as it is in any case, but the peculiarity of the situation became evident with the number of mishaps increasing that too of similar nature. This is when the Ford Explorer Rollover period, if one can call it, started. The company came in to the limelight, only this time round not for the right reasons. The clients started blaming Ford Motors for the continual accidents, which occurred in high incidence and simply could not be ignored. The reports against this sports utility version started flying in from every direction and all the reports suggested that the fatality rate in this vehicle due to rollovers was more than in any other. The issue at hand for the Ford Motors had become pretty serious and some prominent step had to be taken in order to rectify the situation in the best possible manner that they could, what with lawsuits being filed and the public eye on their reactions to all the uproar that their product had caused in the auto industry, wherein even the competitors were waiting for a chance to score a one up on this company which had carved a significant niche for itself and was trying to handle this debacle in the best possible way. At this point Ford had started exercising damage control. The reports in the mean time had started speculating and drawing conclusions as to what could have possibly gone wrong. They suggested that the cause for the rollovers was beyond being a tire problem. It rooted from the lack of stability of the vehicle. This usually happens when the vehicle has high central gravity. Ford denied any such allegations put against them, and were confident that there was nothing wrong with the design of the vehicle and insisted on the problem being limited to the tires of the vehicle. The Ford Co. and the justifications rightly being given were vigilantly fighting the lawsuits. The engineering's design was being blamed for these mishaps but the company would hear of no such thing. The tires of the car Firestone was also being checked up for the cause and was found equally responsible for the rollovers occurrence. The sports utility vehicle that was supposed to create a storm in the market sure did create that and much more but just not in the way the company expected it. In spite of all the explanations given by the company over and over again the engineers of the company thought it best to bring about some verifications in the design of the car to make it more feasible and acceptable and also perhaps improve their vehicle technically. Ford Motor Co. has now launched the Ford Explorer 2002 and hence has innovated and improved technologically in the fields of safety, comfort and ride features which promise to lead the industry into the future. The Explorer has become not only technologically sound but also included with many safety measures. But the fate of Explorer2002 rated, as one of the finest sports utility cars by Ford Motor co. remains unknown to the apprehensive consumer looking for a fine sports utility vehicle.
