Attentional Deficits in Brain Injury Cases

Attentional deficits are the most common cognitive deficits in mild Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) patients. Slowed reaction or mental processing could be side effects. Other side effects could also include difficulty with poor concentration, heightened distractibility, difficulty handing more than one task at a time, and complaints of impaired and/or "short-term" memory.

The most common complaint of a "memory problem" in mild brain injury is usually related to attentional deficits. The deficits may include distractibility and verbal retrieval deficits.

In the more severe cases the injured person may complain of confusion, inability to think clearly, and disorientation. The later problem is likely to by accompanied by tendencies to underestimate time periods.
