Family and friends were shocked when Chef Chris Davis died four days after beginning a methadone prescription in August 2010, according to reports. When it became apparent that his doctor, Gauthum Reddy, prescribed the methadone to allegedly help him recover from drug addiction, the family began to realize that Davis’s death may have been avoidable. While methadone can alleviate pain, it is regularly used to help alleviate symptoms of drug dependence.
Davis had a record of dependence on substances, including prescription drugs and alcohol. Additionally, Davis was overweight and already had an enlarged heart. He died after taking the methadone prescription, and his family sued in order to collect damages for wrongful death due to malpractice. Named as defendants in the suit were Dr. Reddy, Target and a local pharmacist.
The jury found Dr. Reddy to be 53 percent responsible for the negligence that caused Davis’ death, and also found Davis 47 percent responsible for his own death based on his actions. The malpractice and wrongful death trial also resulted in the jury awarding $9.5 million to Davis’ family, which includes his wife and three children. The jury took over 10 hours to decide the verdict. It is not clear if there will be any criminal consequences for Dr. Reddy for his involvement in Davis’ death.
According to the International Coalition for Drug Awareness, approximately 200,000 people die from prescription drug reactions every year, and another 80,000 die from medical malpractice. Unfortunately, many individuals want to treat their pain with drugs when they may have had a problem with prescription medicines in the past. It is important to always tell your doctor about your previous medical history, and to get a second medical opinion if necessary. When it comes to ensuring that the medicine you put in your body is right for you, you should never take any chances.
