slip and fall elderly

slip and fall elderlyEveryone understands that medical care costs money, especially emergency medical care.  Everyone also tends to understand that older Americans tend to face a higher risk in general for needing medical care than their younger counterparts.  As such, one of the biggest sources of stress for older people is the possibility that they will become ill or suffer injuries that lead to enormous medical costs.  Most people cannot afford these costs and some face serious financial difficulties as a result of them at a time in their lives when they should be relatively free of stress.

One of the biggest reasons that older Americans face unforeseen medical bills is because they are injured in slip and fall accidents.  The problem has become extremely prevalent and it’s expected to get worse as the population of the United States collectively ages.  Given this context, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or the CDC, recently published some startling numbers regarding the cost of slip and fall accidents for older Americans.  A link to that full report can be found here.

Overall, slip and fall accidents among older adults in the United States led to $30 billion in direct medical costs alone during 2010.  In addition, the informational page included the following:

  • One-third of people over the age of 65 in the United States fall every year.
  • 20 – 30 percent of older people who fall suffer moderate to severe injuries that make independent living more difficult.
  • Older adults spend time in hospitals because of slip and fall accidents five times more often than because of any other type of incident or injury.
  • In 2011, 2.4 million older people reported to emergency rooms after slip and fall accidents, and nearly 700,000 of them had to be hospitalized.

Clearly, these are problematic numbers that as stated above are likely to only get worse as more people reach their older years.

In addition to the cost to society as a whole, these numbers break down to the point where hundreds of thousands of people every year may face this difficult situation because they entered a property that was not safe.  People in this position need to take steps to stand up for their legal rights so that they do not have to deal with all of the costs relating to these incidents.  When someone has surgery and needs time to rehabilitate, that can lead to tens of thousands of dollars in medical costs.

If you or someone you love has slipped, fallen and been injured as a result of an unsafe condition that was present on the property where the injury occurred, you need to take steps to fully evaluate your legal rights and options.  You can do so by seeking the help of Las Vegas slip and fall lawyers who have been fighting successfully on behalf of clients for many years.  Contact the Sam Harding Law Firm today to schedule a free initial consultation.
