Las Vegas Dog Bite Lawyers

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia, nearly 2% of the U.S. population is bitten or attacked by a dog each year. This translates to nearly 5 million dog bite victims a year, most victims are children. In a 10 year period, the amount of dogs rose by 2%, while the amount of bites increased by 33%. About 1,000 dog bite victims arrive in hospital emergency rooms every day for treatment. Dog bite losses exceed $1 billion per year, with $345 million paid by homeowners or their insurance policies.

Dogs bite: What causes this to happen?

There are many reasons why a dog will bite. Dogs tend to bite out of fear or to protect their territory or to establish their control over the person bitten. Some owners mistakenly teach their dogs that biting is an "okay" form of play behavior, and every year a number of newborn babies die when they are bitten or attacked by dogs that view them as "prey." There are many common sense methods of preventing dog bites, but sometimes there is no way to avoid an attack. If you are attacked, first try to prevent the attack with an object like a coat or hand bag. If you are knocked to the ground, or fall, curl into the fetal position, also try to shield your face by covering your head neck and ears as well.

What should I do if I am bitten by a dog?

Try to i.d. the dog that bit you and see if you can obtain the address to the residence at which the dog bite occurred. If it's a stray, you could end up having to get additional medical care such as rabies treatments, which can be very painful. However, if the dog is owned by someone you may not require rabies treatment and you also may be entitled to a personal injury lawsuit claim against the owner.

Be sure to get the names, addresses and phone numbers of any witnesses. At Sam Harding Law Firm we contact these witnesses as soon as possible because memories fade as time passes.

Have good photos taken of your injuries on the day of the attack and at reasonable intervals of time periods afterwards. This is extremely important to document the first appearance of infections, bite wounds and marks or scratches on the face if you were bitten on the face, and other essential visual images of the effects of the attack.

Get medical attention as soon as quickly as possible after being attacked and strictly follow all doctor instructions relating to your care. Get medical attention soon because any delay in getting medical attention may negatively affect your eligibility for a claim.

As a dog bite victim, you could be entitled to damages and losses, including medical bills and emotional damage, to loss of the ability to earn income in the future because of disfigurement.
