According to news reports, Gustavo Martinez-Garcia, 51, has been charged with felony driving under the influence and killing two people in an accident on the northwest Las Vegas Summerlin Parkway. His bail has been set at $500,000.
The accident in February claimed the lives of Savanna Rae Gonzales, 20, and her passenger Frank Anthony Spenia III, 31. According to police, Martinez-Garcia was driving his Chevrolet Silverado pickup while under the influence of alcohol and crossed a landscaped median, hitting Gonzales’ Toyota Corolla sedan head-on.
The families of Gonzales and Spenia joined together to raise awareness of the costs of drinking and driving by petitioning for guard rails to be placed along Summerlin Parkway. According to McKenzie McNeil, whose husband was killed along the same stretch of road, “a simple guardrail or barrier might have been able to stop another family from having to go through this tragedy.” While alcohol was mostly to blame for the accident, better lighting, lower speeds, and a guard rail could have helped save lives.
Other organizations, like Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD), work to raise awareness and stop drunk driving. They also provide support to those who have lost loved ones to the negligence of drunk drivers. These types of organizations can be an excellent outlet for those who wish to aid in the fight against drunk drivers by raising awareness.
While your unfortunate run-in with a drunk driver will be handled by the law it can also help you to contribute in raising awareness about the risks and dangers of drinking and driving.
