Overview Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic brain injury is commonly the result of a very sudden, violent blow to the head that launches the brain on a dangerous collision course with the inside of the skull to bruise the brain, tear nerve fibers and cause potential bleeding. This type of injury can occur in auto accidents, slip and fall accidents, or from merchandise falling on a person.

The severity of the injury may vary tremendously, depending on the part of the brain that is affected and the extent of the damage. A mild injury can cause temporary confusion and headache, but a serious one can be fatal.

The brain controls all of your movements, behaviors, thoughts and sensations; a traumatic brain injury causes wide-ranging physical and psychological effects. The immediate physical effects will include bruising and swelling. When injured brain tissue swells, it creates a second, delayed problem- pressure. As the injured tissue starts to expand, it pushes against the skull with increasing force and tends to cause additional damage. Signs and symptoms of a mild traumatic brain injury (concussion) may include a short period of unconsciousness; amnesia for events immediately before and after the injury; headache; confusion; dizziness or loss of balance; sensory problems such as blurred vision, ringing in the ears; mood changes; memory /concentration problems, Moderate to severe injuries can cause persistent headaches; repeated vomiting or nausea; convulsions or seizures; not being able to be awaken from sleep; dilation of one or both pupils of the eyes; slurred speech; weakness or numbness in extremities; profound confusion, agitation or combativeness.

Children or adolescents with brain trauma may refuse to eat, appear listless or tired, experience altered sleep patterns and school performance or lose interest in favorite toys or activities.

Have your child checked by a doctor if you believe he or she may have suffered a blow or trauma to the head, especially if the symptoms are convulsions, weakness or numbness in extremities, repeated vomiting or slurred speech.
