The residue of this lubricant has been found to cause unfavorable reactions within the body that lead to the loosening either of the shell or in some cases, the shell never adhering to the bone in the first place.
It was by investigation from Sulzer that it became apparent small amounts of the mineral oil-based lubricants had leaked into the machine coolant and remained on the shells even after the cleansing process.
Out of the 25,000 parts recalled, 17,500 had actually been implanted. Sulzer parts not included by the recall have been manufactured by another process and therefore are not affected. Although the FDA is not requiring surgeons to contact the patient, Sulzer is recommending they do so. It is Sulzers primary purpose to deliver all pertinent information regarding the recall to the appropriate parties.
Symptoms include but are not limited to:
Upon implantation up to 6 weeks
Increased thigh pain
Pain with ambulation, rising from a seated position
Groin or anterior trochanteric pain
6 weeks to 3 months
Pain when weight is placed upon hip, requiring a cane or crutch
Not being able to exert resistance tested in straight raised leg test or side-lying abduction test
At or beyond 3 months
X-rays only periodically indicate a nearly complete radiolucent line around the acetabular component
Criticism of Sulzer for failing to take action sooner indicates that they waited nearly a year to take the products off the market even though surgeons noticed patients implanted with the product experienced more difficulty than usual.
