A four-vehicle crash at Charleston and Arville has left a woman dead and her son in critical condition. The driver of one of the four cars involved fled the scene after the accident.
According to police reports, an Oldsmobile carrying a woman and her son was traveling west on Charleston and turned left onto Arville. The Oldsmobile collided with an oncoming GMC Yukon. The Oldsmobile slammed into the wall of the nearby Flex Cocktail Lounge. The driver of the GMC continued on, hitting two minivans before stopping. Witnesses said the driver stayed at the scene for a few minutes before fleeing on foot.
Edward Charles Barber, 49, turned himself in the next day as the driver who fled the scene, according to police sources. Barber is charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident involving death or injury, driving without a license, and driving without proof of insurance.
Barber stated he approached the intersection at a yellow light but was unable to avoid hitting the Oldsmobile. Police are not saying whether Barber caused the crash, and have actually stated that the Oldsmobile turned left in front of his GMC. Police did say they are investigating to see if speed was a factor.
